to attend to it. There were two sets of Pigeon holes arranged
alphabetically for Poste Restante, one for town, the other for
ship's letters. These pigeon holes were full of letters and
other mail matter waiting delivery. In the case of the town
letters there was probably nothing more than three months old,
but the ship's letters dated back years.
8. For these Poste Restante articles
there should be proper register kept to show how they have been

disposed of. An attempt had been made to open registers and
had ended, as far as I could see, by some 7 or 8 entries having
been made under the letter A.
9. The staff at the Shanghai Post Office
follows, excluding the Chinese;-
at present is as
1. Postmaster, Mr.Solly,

$2880 per annum with
quarters.
$1440 per annum, rising
by triennial increments
of $240 to $1920.
$1200 per annum.
4. Third clerk Mr.Perpetua, $600 per annum.
5. Fourth Clerk
Mr.Bastain, 8480 per annum.
10. The Postmaster has general charge of
the Department, keeps the accounts, supervises the receipt and despatch of contract mails, attends to registered articles in Poste Restante and unclaimed and dead letters, and assists en-
erally in all work in the office.
